Aberdeen Radiation Protection Services is proud to welcome a new Radioactive Waste Adviser (RWA) onto the team. ARPS employee Colin Duncan has now achieved his full RWA accreditation, which increases our qualified RWAs to four (and there are only 234 in the UK).

What does it take to achieve RWA accreditation?

The professional qualification, awarded by the HSE-approved assessing body RPA2000, requires candidates to complete a portfolio of work covering all aspects of environmental regulations, demonstrating practical competence alongside workplace experience.

Last year, Colin - who has a BSc in Geology and Petroleum Geology from Aberdeen University and an MSc in Petroleum Geochemistry from Newcastle University – also achieved his full RPA certification.

Commenting on his additional accreditation achievement, Colin said:

“When I joined ARPS as a trainee RPA, my main aim was to achieve full RPA and RWA accreditation, so I’m proud to have now accomplished both those goals.

“I am now one of only 234 fully qualified RWAs working across the UK, and I’m looking forward to being able to provide radiological waste advice and support to our clients, particularly those embarking on decommissioning projects in the coming years.”

ARPS Radiation Services Director Matt Brodie added:

“Colin has shown real dedication to achieve his RWA certification and having another fully qualified RWA at ARPS will really strengthen the team’s ability to provide the best possible service to our clients.”
