Grads on the ground gives an insight into what our young professionals are doing in their varied day-to-day job out in the field. In this article, Delta-Simons' Graduate Geoenvironmental Consultant, Anna Higgins, shares an insight into her role and a recent talk she was invited to at Northumbria University.

Grad On The Ground

Hi, Grad on the Ground Anna Higgins  here! I have been working for Delta-Simons in the Geoenvironmental team in Leeds for over a year now and I have worked on various projects across the UK. My ‘average’ working week varies greatly, from being out in the field managing Site Investigations to being in the office producing a variety of reports (including Geoenvironmental Assessments, Preliminary Risk Assessments and Remediation Strategies to name a few). No one week ever looks the same which is an element of my job that I thoroughly enjoy!

Recently, myself and fellow graduate (and colleague,) Maz Hahn, were invited to talk to the current cohort of students studying for their Masters in Environmental Monitoring, Modelling and Reconstruction at Northumbria University (the very course which led us to our current careers with Delta-Simons).

We discussed our experiences on the course, how the skills we learned helped us get into the industry and what the average work week looks like as a Graduate Consultant in the environmental sector. It was a fantastic opportunity to discuss what career opportunities are available after graduating and explore some of the differences between academia and industry.

We have kindly been asked to return on an annual basis to talk to undergraduate, post-graduate and PhD students about our careers, and hopefully inspire the next cohort of students to consider a career in environmental consultancy.
