Grads on the ground gives an insight into what our young professionals are doing in their varied day-to-day job out in the field. In this article, Delta-Simons' Graduate Acoustican, Chloe Glenn, shares an insight into a recent Noise Impact Assessment for a proposed warehouse and distribution development.
Hi, Grad on the Ground Chloe Glenn here!
I have been working for Delta-Simons in the Noise and Vibration team for a year now, undertaking noise and vibration impact assessments for a wide range of projects, from Noise at Work assessments, to planning applications for residential developments and logistics hubs.
Recently I have been working on a Noise Impact Assessment for a proposed warehouse and distribution development, with associated Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) bays and fixed external plant. The development has the potential to generate noise that could impact existing sensitive neighbouring properties, and it is my job to ensure that it doesn’t!
I visited the Site to undertake baseline noise measurements to establish the current noise environment. As you can see by the image, it was heavily dominated by noise from overhead aircrafts, which did provide a nice view and entertainment for lunchtime!
Now back from Site, I have been undertaking 3D noise modelling of the proposed development using CadnaA to predict the dispersion of noise from the fixed plant and HGVs to the existing neighbouring properties. The resultant levels from the modelling are compared against the baseline noise measurements to determine the noise impact of the proposed development on existing receptors. If this exceeds baseline noise measurements, mitigation measures will be considered to reduce the impacts.
Throughout my time at Delta-Simons so far, I have had the opportunity to visit and work in some amazing places around the country and, when the sun decides to appear, even get to enjoy the sunshine! I look forward to continuing to develop my skills on unique projects to further my knowledge and enhance my progression.
