Grads on the ground gives an insight into what our young professionals are doing in their varied day-to-day job out in the field. Delta-Simons' Graduate Environment, Helath & Safety (EHS) Consultant, Rachael Twine, gives an insight into a an EHS audit.
Hi, Grad on the Ground Rachael Twine here!
I have been working for Delta-Simons in the Regulatory Operational Compliance division of the Environmental Health Safety(EHS) team for 8 months now. One aspect of my role is assisting in conducting EHS audits for organisations across all industries of all sizes. This is important because Delta-Simons can provide recommendations and requirements to control hazards and risks associated with the business, improving the wellbeing of our client’s employees and their environmental performance.
Today I have been in North Wales auditing a Gas Peaker site where a number of generators provide electricity to the UK during times of shortage. This was particularly interesting as it is a different type of site to others I have been involved with; there are always various site-specific measures to consider and every site is unique! Other EHS auditing opportunities I have had so far range from industrial and manufacturing sites through to offices for global tech companies. This image is from a site I visited where recycled wood is being repurposed. It was important to consider the hazards and risks associated with machinery such as fork lift trucks and dumpers.
I find it interesting to see the varied approaches to EHS management systems and safety culture - it’s a great way to learn more about the complex and ever-changing EHS legal requirements! I am excited to continue developing my EHS auditing skills and take on more responsibility with future projects.
Traditionally auditing has always taken place at the client’s site, however COVID-19 has provided new opportunities for flexibility, and Delta-Simons now also offers both hybrid and fully remote auditing with unquestionable advantages.
