Lucion Consulting was the health and safety consultant to the Lakeland Arts project in the Lake District National Park which opened in March 2019.

Designed by the London architect, Carmody Groarke, the museum’s Stirling Prize shortlist follows a string of accolades this year that have included the RIBA North West Award 2021, RIBA North West Building of the Year Award 2021, RIBA North West Client of the Year Award 2021 and the RIBA National Award given to buildings across the UK recognised as making significant contributions to architecture.

From the inception of the project in 2012, Lucion Consulting provided CDM Consultancy to the client ensuring legal compliance was maintained through every stage of the redevelopment of the site - from the initial demolition, relocation of construction of temporary workshop facilities, allowing preservation work to continue while the construction of the new museum was done.

Nestling into the eastern shore of Lake Windermere, Windermere Jetty houses a collection of boats in a lake-side cluster of copper-clad buildings. The museum is treading new grounds as it is the first contemporary building on the shores of the lake in 50 years and vying to be the first museum building to win the Stirling Prize this century.

Designed to accommodate an internationally significant display of boats, including motorboats, steam launches and yachts, the museum is created to look like a grouping of sheds on the banks of the lake and is a fine example of architecture creating not just space but a sense of place too.

Lucion Consulting also extended our specialised services to Architect Carmody Groake who were the Principal Designer on the scheme during the construction phase.

In the final phase of the scheme, we provided CDM consultancy to the Landscape Architects Jonathan Cook Landscape Architects Ltd (JCLA) and the exhibition fit-out design team, REAL Studios, ensuring both internal and external elements were delivered safely in time for the museum opening.

The museum project was delivered over several phases, involving a core design team but several different contractor teams, spanning over several years:

• Phase 1 - Demolition of the old buildings on the site

• Phase 2 - Temporary buildings to house some of the collection and to allow the workshop to continue their preservation activities

• Phase 3 - Construction of the new museum buildings

• Phase 4 and 5 (ran concurrently) - External Landscaping works and internal exhibition fit-out running up to the Museum opening 

Windermere Jetty Museum is included in the RIBA Stirling Prize shortlist of an eclectic collection of six buildings – all new-build projects – competing to be crowned the winner of the 2021 Stirling Prize. The shortlist was drawn from the 54 winners of the RIBA National Awards.

The RIBA Stirling Prize is given to the architect of the building thought to be the most significant of the year for the evolution of architecture and the built environment. The winner will be announced on 14 October 2021.
