Driving Sustainable Shipping

The event holds particular significance as a platform for driving sustainable progression within the shipping industry. It features a distinguished lineup of global authorities, experts, and thought leaders, with the recent announcement that John F. Kerry, the United States Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, will deliver a closing address at the Ocean Leadership Conference. This underscores Nor-Shipping's commitment to fostering positive change and sustainability.

Ship decarbonisation remains a key focus, driven by three fundamental factors;

1. Firstly, regulations and regulatory bodies such as the Safety of Life At Sea (SOLAS) and the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) play a vital role in shaping energy efficiency regulations and propelling decarbonisation efforts. 
2. Secondly, capital and funding opportunities are abundant for investors and sellers looking to invest in or divest their ship and offshore assets, with sustainability and carbon reduction measures being key drivers for increasing asset value. 
3. Lastly, transparency and reputation are of paramount importance, with increased requirements for emissions reporting and transparency throughout the supply chain. This has prompted operators within the maritime industry to invest in sustainability and carbon reduction measures, driven by the expectations of cargo owners, investors, and financial institutions.

Over the past decade, the marine industry has witnessed significant regulatory developments regarding carbon reduction and sustainability. Mandatory energy efficiency regulations for ships, such as the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) and Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP), have been adopted under the MARPOL Annex VI. Last year, in 2022, EEDI Phase 3 was implemented ahead of schedule for certain ship types, necessitating significantly higher energy efficiency standards for new build ships.

In 2021, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) introduced mandatory carbon intensity requirements, known as the CII, EEXI, and SEEMP6, to reduce the carbon intensity of international shipping and align with the greenhouse gas reduction targets established in the 2018 Initial IMO Strategy.

Talking about the increasing demand for decarbonisation and sustainable development in the marine industry, Marine and Offshore Business Development Manager Simon Hall commented;

These include the adoption of the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) under the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) for new ships, and the revision of the IMO GHG Strategy, which aims to achieve a 40% reduction in the carbon intensity of international shipping by 2030.

The increasing frequency of climate-related disasters and rising global temperatures have fueled a strong demand for Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG), and Sustainability services in the maritime industry. Around 90% of the world's goods enter the shipping industry, making the industry a key player in the development of a green supply chain.
