Asbestos In Soils FAQs

If asbestos is detected in soil samples from your site, it is essential to engage with experienced professionals to develop an appropriate risk management and remediation strategy. Lucion’s team of environmental consultants and hazardous materials specialists can provide expert guidance on next steps, including further testing, risk assessment, remediation options, and regulatory compliance. Our team works closely with you to develop tailored solutions that address your specific challenges and ensure the safety of your stakeholders and the environment.

Asbestos in soils testing provides critical data on the presence, type, and concentration of asbestos fibres in soil samples. This information is essential for assessing the risks associated with soil disturbance activities, developing effective risk management strategies, and ensuring compliance with regulations such as CAR 2012 and the CAR-SOIL guidance. By understanding the extent and nature of asbestos contamination, you can make informed decisions about remediation, disposal, and site management to protect your stakeholders and maintain regulatory compliance.

Lucion’s UKAS ISO 17025 accredited laboratory uses a range of methods for asbestos in soils testing, including polarised light microscopy (PLM) and dispersion staining techniques for identification, gravimetric methods and point counting techniques for quantification, and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis for conclusive evidence of asbestos fibres. Our methods comply with industry standards and regulatory requirements to ensure accurate and reliable results.

The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 (CAR 2012) sets out the legal requirements for managing asbestos risks in the UK. The CAR-SOIL guidance, developed by the Joint Industry Working Group (JIWG) and supported by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), provides specific interpretation and guidance for managing and working with asbestos in soil and construction & demolition materials.

Asbestos contamination in soils can occur through various means, including the historic demolition of buildings containing ACMs, improper disposal of asbestos waste, and the use of asbestos-containing fill materials. Industrial sites, brownfield sites, and other land with a history of development are particularly susceptible to asbestos contamination.

Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous mineral that was widely used in construction materials due to its thermal and fire-resistant properties. When asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) are damaged or degraded, asbestos fibres can be released into the soil, posing a risk to human health through inhalation. Asbestos exposure has been linked to serious respiratory diseases, including lung cancer and mesothelioma.

Insights from insightful articles highlight how managing asbestos risks is crucial for the success of brownfield development projects.

We align with Environment Agency guidelines, providing support in assessing and managing land contamination, particularly asbestos risks.

SEM provides accurate results, and UKAS accreditation ensures processes meet the highest standards, giving you peace of mind.

Understanding and quantifying asbestos in soils empowers you with valuable insights for effective risk management and decision-making.

Asbestos testing ensures a safe and risk-free environment, mitigating potential threats and allowing your team to work confidently.
