Bird Ecology Surveys FAQs

The validity of bird survey data can vary depending on the scale and nature of your development, as well as any changes to the site conditions. As a general rule, we recommend updating surveys every 1-2 years to ensure the information remains current and accurately reflects the site’s bird populations.

Mitigation solutions can range from timing works to avoid disturbance during the breeding season, to creating alternative habitats or installing deterrents to prevent birds from accessing areas of construction. Our experienced ecologist team will work with you to develop tailored strategies that meet all legal requirements.

Our comprehensive bird surveys provide the robust evidence base you need to satisfy planning requirements and navigate any challenges posed by protected species. We’ll work closely with you to identify potential impacts, design appropriate mitigation, and obtain the necessary licences, ensuring your project remains compliant.

The optimal survey seasons vary depending on the target species and their ecological requirements. Breeding bird surveys are typically conducted between March and June, while wintering bird surveys take place from October to March. Our experienced ecologists will advise on the most appropriate timing for your project.

The specific surveys required will depend on the site characteristics and the potential impacts of your development. Common survey types include breeding bird surveys (March-June), wintering bird surveys (October-March), and species-specific surveys for protected or notable species.

All wild birds, their nests, and eggs are protected under UK law. If your development has the potential to impact birds or their habitats, you are legally required to undertake surveys and implement appropriate mitigation measures before proceeding.
