The UK is home to a diverse array of birdlife, with many species afforded legal protection. If your development has the potential to impact birds or their habitats, Lucion’s ecologists provide the comprehensive surveys, assessments, and mitigation strategies you need to navigate the planning process and keep your project on track.
Birds and their nests are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000, making them a critical consideration for any development project. Failing to identify and mitigate impacts on protected species could lead to significant delays, additional costs, and even prosecution.Â
That’s where Lucion comes in. Our team of experienced ornithologists have the expertise to guide you through every stage of the bird survey and assessment process, ensuring your project remains compliant with the relevant legislation.Â
The bird survey process typically involves three key stages:Â
Scoping/Walkover Survey Â
Our ecologists will conduct an initial site visit to identify any field signs of bird activity, such as nests, roosts, and foraging areas. This allows us to determine the potential presence of protected species and the need for further, more detailed surveys.Â
Breeding Bird SurveysÂ
If the scoping survey identifies the potential for breeding birds, we’ll undertake a series of visits between March and June to map territories, record activity, and identify any Schedule 1 species.Â
Wintering Bird Surveys Â
For sites that may be important for overwintering birds, we’ll conduct surveys between October and March to assess usage and identify any notable species or flocks.Â
Lucion’s ornithologists maintain and enhance their knowledge of ecology and the environment through ongoing research, specialist training, and by maintaining active membership with the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management. This ensures they are at the forefront of best practice, delivering the highest quality bird surveys and assessments.Â
Where impacts on birds or their habitats are identified, our team will work with you to develop appropriate mitigation strategies. This may include timing works to avoid disturbance, creating alternative habitats, or obtaining the necessary licences to permit activities that could affect protected species.Â
By partnering with Lucion, you can be confident that your bird surveys are being carried out to the highest standards by qualified, licensed professionals. We’ll provide the guidance and support you need to keep your project moving forward, while ensuring full compliance with wildlife legislation.Â
