Radiological Lab Surveys FAQs

As a permit holder, you are responsible for ensuring that your laboratory is returned to a satisfactory state before surrendering or modifying your permit. This involves engaging a Radioactive Waster Adviser (RWA), like Lucion, to develop a decommissioning plan, conduct a comprehensive contamination survey, and assist with any necessary decontamination work. The final survey report, signed off by the RWA, is a key component of the permit surrender application.

As an appointed Radioactive Waste Adviser (RWA), Lucion can provide guidance throughout the decommissioning process, from developing a decommissioning plan to communicating with environmental regulators. If contamination is found during the survey, we can assist with remedial work and decontamination to ensure the laboratory is returned to a satisfactory state.

Our survey reports provide detailed findings, including maps and data visualisations, as well as expert interpretation and recommendations for optimizing radiation protection arrangements. The report can be used to demonstrate that the laboratory has been returned to a satisfactory state, a requirement for surrendering or modifying permits.

Lucion’s radiological contamination surveys employ a range of techniques, including monitoring for radioactive sources, swabbing and wipe testing of surfaces and drainage areas, visual checks for labels and equipment, and dose rate measurements. Our team uses advanced equipment and methodologies to ensure accurate and reliable results.

Laboratories that work with radioactive materials must ensure the safety of their personnel and comply with radiation protection regulations. Radiological contamination surveys help identify potential hazards, guide decontamination efforts, and provide documentation needed for regulatory compliance and decommissioning planning.

A radiological contamination laboratory survey is a comprehensive assessment of a laboratory space to identify and quantify the presence of radioactive materials and contamination. The survey involves various techniques, such as dose rate monitoring, surface contamination testing, and visual inspections, to ensure the laboratory is free from radiation hazards.
