Contaminated Land Consultants – Lovell Partnership

Share

Delta-Simons was appointed by Lovell Partnership to carry out contaminated land work at a £2.75 million proposed housing development on St Margaret’s Road in Lowestoft. A total of 29 energy efficient homes to Level 4 Code for Sustainable Homes were being developed on the site.

Outline / Scope of Works

The site, formerly a waste-water treatment facility, had already undergone a third party intrusive investigation, however the investigation had failed to provide sufficient information to discharge the planning conditions, therefore a gap-filling exercise was performed by our containated land specialists. During further intrusive investigation, additional previously unidentified contamination was encountered, predominantly comprising benzo(a)pyrene within the Made Ground, a chemical substance originally found in coal tar that is highly carcinogenic. Therefore, a site-specific risk assessment had to be carried out with respect to benzo(a)pyrene, which was developed into a Remediation Method Statement (RMS).

Outcome

Given the nature of the contamination identified, our team developed an RMS that appropriately addressed the contamination, however, did not require a significant amount of the current Made Ground to be removed or remediated, therefore, saving the Client significant costs and time.

The Remediation Method Statement was accepted by the Local Authority, and the remediation was carried out by the Client with supervision and validation work being undertaken by our team to discharge the planning conditions.
